Ok, I finally did it. I've added Deep Tissue to my massage menu. It isn't that I don't do deep tissue. Many clients who like deep work have characterized my work as some of the deepest, most vigorous work they've received. I've just had a philosophical problem listing on my website. You see, I don't believe there's such a thing as "Deep Tissue." Every massage should provide the depth of work that is satisfying and necessary to the particular tissue being worked at the time. When people ask for "deep tissue," they are usually just asking for a satisfying massage. This means entirely different things to different people. Sometimes I get asked for Deep Tissue, and after checking in with the client, they really didn't need it all that deep at all, they're satisfied with something lighter than I would consider "deep" work and would be screaming and writhing in agony if they received the work that other clients find satisfying. As it turns out, the quality of massage training and skill is so sparsely concentrated within the profession, that some people have had only the most superficial, amateurish work from tentative, timid, unschooled or lazy therapists. When they ask for "Deep Tissue" they're really saying they want a massage. They want to feel like they've been massaged, that their needs have been met, their trigger points released, their tension and pain relieved. Often such a request will come from someone who's had a lot of bodywork. After a while you develop a tolerance and trust of deeper, penetrating work. I know I have in the work I receive. But it still boils down to intuitively sensing the work needed in the body and in the tissue you're working on. It isn't that the work is the same on everyone. It's not a routine or a protocol. It's the process that's the same. Meet each client where they are, give them everything you have, your entire being, to meet the needs presented in this person in this moment. As a side note, you would be astounded at the number of spas that demand their therapists work from a 'protocol,' giving everyone exactly the same massage regardless of what they came for, specifically to insure that all the work is equally mediocre, that no therapist develops a following or stands out. They view outstanding work as a threat to their business model! They would rather deliver consistently mediocre work than become dependent on a particular therapist or therapists to meet the expectations of their clients. By lowering expectations, they can consistently meet them. McMassage. I even recall a massage school saying, with some pride, that they wanted all their graduates to be able to give their "signature" massage, exactly the same way. The sequence they were training toward, the bar they wanted their graduates to meet, was unimpressive and amateurish. But even if it had required great skill, it would still have been a one-size-fits-all, robotic approach to the work. That's not what I do. I do offer some distinctly different styles of massage, Thai is very different from Swedish/Deep Tissue, Lomi Lomi is specifically tailored to address the total person, to spiritually and emotionally nurture and support, as well as providing a vigorous full body massage. But depth is a feature of all massage techniques, not really a style unto itself. As to the subject of depth itself, it pays to discuss this a bit. The deepest massage you should get, ever, should be right at your pain threshold. This is not to say that you won't experience pain, or discomfort when getting at rigid, dense tissue or stubborn trigger points, but it should be pain that is satisfying, a sweet aching, as your body surrenders and allows deeper penetration, yielding to the work. A sharp, shooting pain, pain that causes you to tense, to involuntarily flinch and harden, that provokes an endorphin flush, is indicative of injury, injury taking place right here, right now, on the massage table. Your body is fighting the work, fighting for it's survival. Fighting to remain intact. This is a no win battle. Your body will either win the fight with the therapist, remaining as or more constricted as it was when you walked in, fully armored to endure more abuse, or your body will lose and you will be injured, perhaps seriously. . |
